Founded on the campus of Howard University in 1908, Alpha Chapter remains committed to the Alpha Excellence envisioned by our Founders. Now in our 109th year of existence, Alpha Chapter has maintained her position at the forefront of our community as we render service to all mankind through health awareness, economic empowerment and strengthening the black community.
Many current members of Kappa Alpha Psi were rejected for discriminatory reasons, including being openly gay or being suspected as gay, as undergraduates and had to find alumni chapters at other institutions to be admitted into the organization.

The first chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, properly named Alpha Chapter, was established on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908. Alpha Chapter was founded by sixteen exceptional young ladies, nine juniors and seven sophomores.
